Beloved

What bonds a family together? A mother to a daughter or a sister to a sister? Love. it brings people together in ways that cannot be fathomed. It's almost indescribable, a feeling or an impulse that forces the mind to react in sometimes unreasonable ways.

Sethe has been living in the past for the last 20 or so years. She regrets killing her first daughter in hopes of saving her from slavery. When "Beloved" returns from the dead, Sethe is compelled to grant her every wish. Beloved shrinks Sethe down to a small being, almost getting back at her for the terrible things she has done. Sethe could hardly see Beloved's anger because she was bonded by such a love for her daughter.

Denver, is also closely connected to her dead sister by the blood from her murder. When she returns, Denver takes to role of taking care and teaching her sister how to live in their home. She feels like Beloved is a companion that will wait with her for her dad and brothers to come home.
Familys are bonded by love. It is here that I declare that I am reforming my "big question" to some form of the bond of love and how far people will go to keep the bond between one and other.

The Stranger

The Stranger concludes us with the overwhelming sense of absurdism. Is there real purpose to any of our lives? If there isn’t then what is there that’s worth living for? I think it depends on who the person is, but there is love. I have deviated off my question throughout the year, and since making this connection is going to be a stretch I’m going to do the best I can.

I know that the love of my family and friends has been incredibly important in my life. I wouldn’t be able to live without them, and they are essential to my being. If a person doesn’t have anyone to care about then it seems that there would be less of a meaning in life. So, I’m going to call this a lack of love in his life and make it a cause of his downfall. He clearly didn’t feel any sorrow for his mother’s passing, and he certainly didn’t lie to himself or anyone else about his feelings. However, if we could look back on his past what would it look like? Does it include and father and a healthy relationship with his family? I’m going to guess that it doesn’t. Without the essential building blocks of a healthy loving relationship with family, there is no way that a person could go beyond that and have a strong relationship with another human being. This lack of love, keeps him for loving Marie and finding any other kind of meaning in his life. So there, take that AP psychology.

Metamorphosis

This short story has to have been one of the strangest I have read thus far in my life. But, I felt like there was lots of different aspects to talk about. What disapointed me the most was how Gregor's family became less and less attached to him as time went on. This may not be true for everyone, but in my family we emphasize the importance of taking care of one and other and helping out. I may not always like my sisters or my parents but I know that they will always be there for me. They are my backbone, and essential to my being. They are my love.

In The Metamorphosis, Gregor's family hardly tolerates his new figure. They put up with him for a while but then decide he is a nuisance and hardly want anything to do with him. It was heartbreaking for me to read this story and watch them abandon Gregor when he need his family the most. Did their love stop when they decided he was no longer a human being? How does a family that relied so much on his existance "morph" in such short time?
